It’s been confirmed that local paper, the Hawick News is to close, however a spokesman has confirmed that no jobs will be lost when the paper ceases publication.
JPIMedia, which also publishes the Southern Reporter and Selkirk Weekend Advertiser has said that “The decision to close has not been taken lightly, but it is crucial that we focus all our efforts on the long-term stability of the business and deliver newspapers and websites which can sustain our business for the long term. We would like to thank all our readers and advertisers for their support through the decades, and we hope they will understand why we have made this decision in these challenging times.”
The Hawick News faced a challenge in 2016 from its former editor Jason Marshall, who set up his own ‘Hawick Paper’ after taking voluntary redundancy from JPIMedia forerunner Johnston Press.
At the same time as the Hawick News ceases publication, the Selkirk Weekend Advertiser will also close. It is expected the last editions of the papers will be printed in the next few weeks.
