The Convenor of Scottish Borders Council has given a warm welcome to a Downing St announcement yesterday (Monday 30 June) that John Jeffrey will be the next Lord Lieutenant of Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale.
Mr Jeffrey will succeed the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, who has held the position since 4 July 2016.
SBC Convener, Councillor Watson McAteer said: “I’m absolutely delighted with the appointment of John Jeffrey as the new Lord-Lieutenant. I am confident that John will continue the Duke’s legacy of service and commitment to our communities. His experience and passion for our region make him the perfect choice for this esteemed role.”
John Jeffrey, born in Kelso, is a former Scottish rugby union player and coach. During his playing career, Jeffrey was a flanker and earned 40 caps for Scotland. His contributions to rugby extend beyond his playing and coaching career. He has been a prominent figure in promoting the sport and ensuring its growth and development in Scotland.
The Duke of Buccleuch said that it had been immense honour to serve the Borders community as Lord-Lieutenant:
“I have witnessed the unwavering spirit and dedication of our communities especially during the very difficult Covid years and as I step down, I am filled with gratitude for the support and camaraderie we have shared. I am delighted to be succeeded by John Jeffrey who I know will offer outstanding service as His Majesty’s representative and in upholding the values and traditions that make our part of the world so special.”
John Jeffrey said of his appointment: “I am deeply honoured to take on the role of Lord-Lieutenant for Roxburgh, Ettrick, and Lauderdale following in the footsteps of the Duke of Buccleuch. Having known the Duke for many years, I have witnessed first-hand the numerous engagements he has overseen with dedication and grace.
“I and my wonderful team of Deputy Lieutenants look forward to working with all of you to continue that legacy of service and support and to earning your trust and confidence. For all of us there is nowhere more special than the Scottish Borders”
